Captured just after the Yankees had secured the 1936 World Series title, this 6-1/8 x 8 image reveals Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig in a jungle-themed leopard skin cloth with his powerful arms and legs protruding for all to behold. A publicity shot, to be sure, the photo shows Gehrig in the lead Tarzan's Revenge role for which he was cast by director Sol Lesser. While Gehrig was to make a successful screen debut two years later as a Montana cattle rancher in Lesser's production of Rawhide, he was passed over for the Tarzan role. An ACME NEWSPICTURES stamping appears on the reverse, and the original caption is adhered. The (EX) condition photo is minimally affected by insignificant creases, vintage strips of transparent tape (on the vertical borders) and very faint discoloration from a flaw in the negative.
