These original news service photographs capture the style and punishing power of pugilism legend Joe Louis. Ranging in measurements from 6-5/8 x 8-1/2 to 10 x 8-1/8, these (4) black-and-white or sepia-toned photos depict “The Brown Bomber” doing battle with Chilean contender Arturo Goody on February 9, 1940. (One of the images is of the combatants during the pre-fight weigh-in.) With “INTERNATIONAL NEWS PHOTOS” stampings on the reverse of all four and original captions accompanying, the photos range in quality from (EX) to (GD) condition, with creases affecting some and transparent tape strips adhered to a few of the borders. Victorious in a fifteen-round decision that night, Louis was to knock out his foe just over five months later in a rematch.
